Hydrogen sulfide, H2S is aharmful byproduct of high-sulfur crude oil refining and natural gas processing that must be dealt with by oil refinery and gas processing plant operators according to the stringent emissions regulations in place. Petro Gasgen offers custom engineered Sulfur Recovery Units (SRU) that utilize the modified Claus process to reliably retrieve around 95 to 98 percent of the hydrogen sulfide feedstream allowing operators to easily meet sulfur recovery requirements and keeping the environment safe in the process.
The Sulfur Recovery Unit utilizes the modified Claus process, which is a two-step reaction scheme overall. Sulfur dioxide, SO2 is produced by burning a part of the total hydrogen sulfide, H2S in the Reaction Furnace. Next, elemental sulfur is formed across the Claus Reactors when the H2S and SO2 react at an ideal ratio of 2:1. Claus Condensers are used to recover liquid sulfur after each catalytic stage. The unreacted leftover H2S and SO2 are then channeled to the next stage, where the presence of Claus catalyst encourages the equilibrium-limited Claus reaction to continue. Another added benefit of the Sulfur Recovery Unit is the produced sulfur can be utilized to produce fertilizers and pesticides.
